Different winch/windlass boat installations

All South Pacific winches are very easy to fit
by the average handyman with the help of an excellent dvd that is included along with bolts, up/down switch, circuit breaker, template for hole drilling along with a instruction booklet.

Important Information windlass 710

710 series windlasses are NOT suitable to use all chain

It is very important to choose the correct type of rope, chain, and electric marine cable to ensure proper running of the Anchor Windlass 710 series.

Rope- Must use 3-strand,medium-lay. Use either of these types of ropes:

For Nylon Gypsy

For Stainless Steel Gypsy

12mm (1/2”) Filament Polyester

12mm (1/2”) Filament Polyester

12mm (1/2”) Premium Nylon*

12mm (1/2”) Premium Nylon*

12mm (1/2”) Polypropylene (Silver Rope)

14mm (9/16”) Polypropylene (Silver Rope)

*Strong Nylon rope is best recommended to ensure rope DOES NOT slip.

**Do not use soft rope. Soft rope will likely slip in the gypsy and over strain the gypsy, or cause the rope to jam in the gypsy and lock the gypsy from turning, causing the circuit breaker to pop-up often.

Chain- Choose anyone of these sizes of chain, 6mm short link, 7mm DIN 766, ¼ inch BBB, ¼ inch G4HT  which is available in your region. [Not exceeding5 metres (18ft)length*]

*IF YOU ARE USING MORE THAN 5 METRES OF CHAIN OR ALL CHAIN, AND THE CHAIN IS ON THE GYPSY WHEN THE ANCHOR IS DOWN (INSTEAD OF ROPE), THE STAINLESS STEEL GYPSY SOCKET WILL BE SHEARED/BROKEN. You will also risk damaging the internal mechanisms of the windlass.

You must ensure that the distance between every other link is between 37mm ~ 43mm.

After you’ve spliced the rope to the chain, tie both ends of spliced rope to prevent loosening.

Important Information

Bollard/cleat/chain stopper

Please be reminded that the windlass is an anchor retrieval device and NOT a load bearing device. It is not designed to take the force of the boat’s drag. Thus we strongly recommend that once anchored, the rope be tied off to a bollard or cleat. If you are using an all chain set-up, a chain stopper should be installed between the bow roller and windlass. This is imperative for the Breeze 710 series or when running more than 15m of chain.

Question and Answers

What is an anchor windlass?
Basically it’s a device installed at the bow of the boat to lift and drop the anchor. The rope and chain is fed through the chain wheel and winds down into the anchor well.

Relief for your back and hands…no more heavy lifting!

Can I use all-chain?
Yes! All South Pacific windlasses (except the Breeze 710 series) are designed to be able to take all chain.

NOTE! Please refer to the Important Information titled Bollard/cleat/chain stopper

How much storage space is needed below the deck?
The amount of storage space needed depends on the length of your chain and rope set-up. For approximately 30m of rope, the anchor well needs to be a minimum of 40cm in depth.

If the anchor well is not deep enough, the chain and rope will build up very quickly and block the entry. If the storage space cannot be modified to allow for the rope, we recommend reducing the length of the chain and rope set-up.

How thick should the deck be to fit a South Pacific windlass?
This depends on what the material of the deck is:

For aluminium, it needs to be at least 5mm in thickness and for fibreglass it needs to be at least 7mm in thickness. If the thickness is less than that, we recommend reinforcing the deck by attaching plywood or a metal plate under the deck, which will spread the force.

Can I install a South Pacific winch on top of the hatch?
Yes! The hatch is a popular and simple installation spot for the windlass. We recommend attaching plywood under the hatch so to spread the force.

NOTE! Please be reminded that the windlass is an anchor retrieval device and NOT a load bearing device. Both the windlass and hatch are not designed to take the force of the boat’s drag. Thus we strongly recommend that once anchored, the rope be tied off to a bollard or cleat. If you are using an all chain set-up, a chain stopper should be installed between the bow roller and windlass.

How do I maintain a South Pacific windlass?
Regular and proper care of the windlass will ensure long-lasting, excellent performance. There are two simple ways to maintain the windlass:

  • Wash off the salt water and any impurities with fresh water after each use
  • Periodically check the electric joiners and the silicon sealant.

Do I need a bow roller?
Yes! A bow roller is an essential part of your set-up. Please ensure that you select and install a suitable bow roller to support your anchor, chain and rope.

What is the difference between spur gears and worm gears?
There are two types of gears used in windlasses. For most of our windlasses we use spur gears. Spur gears (a.k.a a straight cut gear) achieves greater efficiency (92% ~ 98%) as compared to worm gears (50% ~ 88%).

Can I use more than one control unit?
Yes! Our windlasses and capstans come standard with one control unit, this is a direct control system. However if you wish to use more than one control unit,it’s a simple matter of changing your set up to an indirect control system.

To do this you will need a remote control box (reverse solenoid) and the optional control units. There is a choice of:

  • Up/down switch (SW-031)
  • Hand held switch (HH-005)
  • Foot switch (FS-200)

You can attach as many switches as you like.
